Triumph of the Liams Part XII: The History Channel

The History Channel, the one place you can go one cable to see some grainy old footage of Nazis getting shot at. At least that's how it used to be... Over the past few years it seems like the History Channel is pulling an MTV and not airing the type of programming that the channel was named for... Think of the Weather Channel airing a reality show about weathermen. The History Channel has been doing this crap for a while now. I remember in the late nineties when they would rerun old episodes of "In Search of" with Leonard Nemoy. This was a campy faux-investigative report show about supernatural crap like the Lock Ness Monster. I didn't mind this too much because there were still plenty of shows about actual historical events. Well, things have changed quite a bit in the last ten years.

Random Tangent: Punk Rock Needs to Give Up On Life

Sorry, I know this is a bit random, but I'm sick and tired of seeing people who complain about music and how there is no real punk rock anymore. I for one am very happy there is no "real" punk rock left in the world. I would also be very happy if the new wave punk rock would die with it. Now don't get me wrong, some bands pull of the punk with a twist quite decently. Mohawks, leather jackets, and massive metal and tattoos covering your body does not make you cool, or give you elite status within our culture.

"Springria" - Welcome Spring with Fruity Sangria

Last Friday was the official start of Spring, and with some good weather finally sweeping in, it was time to celebrate. Nothing says sunny days and lazy afternoons like fruity sangria. I’ve dubbed the recipes below “Springria” in honor of the new season.

I've included recipes for both white and red wine based sangria. Enjoy some sangria with your friends and enjoy the start of spring!

Olive Dip

I really love olives and I really love dips. So I wanted to create a recipe that used olives, and lots of them. Several recipes I have tasted, have olives in them, but they were more of just a dip with olives rather than an olive dip. I wanted to create something that tasted Mediterranean but still was using common ingredients, most importantly, lots of olives. It has the texture of a tapenade, but a lot more flavors. I have made this dip several times and heard some good comments from my fellow olive lovers.

Quick Stab: NFL Bans Tackling

The NFL Rules Committee recently passed a ban on defenders tackling a Quarterback while they're on the ground.

The NFL legislates just like the government:
Take one “shit happens” moment out of a plethora of otherwise unremarkable incidents and make a rule against it. All because of ONE play out of a season of literally thousands.

“Rule of thumb: When someone says, "There ought to be a law…” there probably ought NOT to be."

Corned Beef and Turkey Reuben Sandwiches

Reubens are simply delicious. The combination of sweet/tangy dressing, salty corned beef, sauerkraut and rye bread is just divine. The Reuben isn't a terribly complicated sandwich, but making a proper reuben requires a little work. Nothing too strenuous, just round up the ingredients listed below and you've got yourself the king of the deli sandwiches... We recently made some pretty killer Reubens and I thought it'd be worthwhile to post the recipe and a few pictures. After all, it's almost Saint Patrick's Day and what's more Irish than corned beef? Well, potatoes and a Guiness I guess... but on short notice I'll settle for a Reuben and a cream ale.

Lost on Hiatus: Season 5 Theories

Lost is off for a week so we won't get any answers for about two weeks. In the meantime I thought I'd speculate a little more on the second half of this season. So far this season the story arc has moved at a pretty frantic pace. I thought it would have taken all season to round up the Oceanic Six and get them back to the island... when it really only took about four episodes. The story is very well laid out but it does seem somewhat rushed. I doubt this will change as we wrap up the fifth season and I think we'll end this season at a point in the storyline that we might not expect. Here are my thoughts...

Buttered Garlic Shrip and Homemade Cole Slaw

I don't eat much seafood. I'm not sure why, it just isn't my favorite thing to eat. I used to eat quite a bit of fried fish as a kid... hey, who doesn't like crispy batter and tartar sauce? But even now, I opt for chicken or beef over fish. Over the last year there have been a few times when I've had fried calamari or salmon that I've really liked but it hasn't really changed my opinion of seafood. This past week we made shrimp, which is probably my second favorite type of seafood, right up there next to fried. Don't get me wrong, I do like shrimp quite a bit. I like my shrimp simple though, nothing fancy... So that's what I made - a simple garlic and butter shrimp dish with a killer side. More on that after the break.
