Maybe because the plate in the film says "OUTATIME", so they chose "88MPH" instead? There's not really a good way to abbreviate OUTATIME any further... OTATIME? OUTATME? OUTATIM?

Thank you. I didn't realize people actually knew the license plate from the movie, and were expecting it to be on that car. That's the piece I was missing.

I remember when I was 12, I seriously told my friends in middle school that my 2 major goals in life were to marry a Playboy Centerfold and to own the Deloreon from Back to the Future.

I once saw one of these parked at the grocery store where I live (Burbank, CA). That was a surreal experience. I mean, who drives their Time Machine to the grocery store?!?

I live in Kansas City, and I actually see that car about once a year or so, usually on Friday nights in the Plaza or the Crossroads district.
As you can imagine, it turns heads.
EDIT: For others who are local, this picture was taken at 119th St and Strang Line Rd, in the KC suburb of Olathe, KS.

holy shit, I think I live like a few blocks from where this pic was taken, I recognize the minimall across the street. I think the street name is Strang Line, which would make sense, since that's where the minimall is.
I'll be on the lookout for flaming tire tracks.

I believe you are mistaken. This picture was taken in Hill Valley, CA just outside the Twin Pines Mall. Or Lone Pine Mall...depending in which alternate universe you find yourself.
AMAZING! find this how to somewhere an then ffind me a delorian and i will be your best friend
This is heavy
there's that word again...heavy...tell me, why are things so heavy in the future?...is there a problem with the earth's gravitational pull?!
Watch the movies again, this car was built in 1988, not the future!
Before anyone asks...
Many states only allow 7 letters in their vanity license plates. :)
Why would someone ask that? That license plate has 5 characters. Is this abnormal?

that car's still going to need roads, unfortunately.
How do you know? Oh, wait you're right. There's no Mr. Fusion Home Energy Reactor on the back. Must be the old model.
If ya watched the rest of the movies it didn't even need roads, it flew.
Without the Mr. Fusion Home Energy Unit on the top, he's gonna need 1.21 Jiggawatts of juice to go anywhere.
jigga what?
jigga please
1.21 Jigawatts! The only thing that can produce that kind of energy is.. A bolt of lightning.
Here was me thinking plutonium did the trick...
Maybe in your time plutonium can be found at any local drug store, but in 2009 it's a bit hard to come by.
You can't just go to the corner store and pick up some plutonium...
What the heck is a jigowatt?!?
Cha-CHAAAAAAA!

Great Scott...

Someone who got off late and needed to pick up food for the family dinner?
Doc Brown, for one. Especially if Marty McFly is hanging out with him

That's about as funny as a screen door on a battleship.
