Marty Watchenheimer 2008: Schottenheimer to return to the Chiefs as GM?

Hey, remember when the Kansas City Chiefs were actually good? It may seem like a distant memory today, but the Chiefs weren't always a shameful disappointment. Once upon a time there lived a man named Marty Schottenheimer. Schottenheimer was the head coach of the Chiefs from 1989 to 1998 and all was well. During Schottenheimer's 9 year stint as head coach the Chiefs went 101-58, a feat which seems unbelievable in an age when Herm Edwards and Carl Peterson can barely muster two wins in their last thirty games... The last couple of years have been rough for Chiefs fans, but things could get a whole lot better very soon. Carl Peterson recently resigned (read: was shit-canned) from the Chiefs and the franchise is looking for a new General Manager. Enter Marty Schottenheimer...

Let's take a short step back for a second... The Chiefs haven't officially ended their season yet, though by some accounts it's been over for a couple of months now, and they are already looking for new management. Clark Hunt, owner of the Chiefs, must be eager to turn the Chiefs around after this season if he isn't waiting for the final 34-0 blow out to start cleaning house. Eager enough to bring back Schottenheimer before the Super Bowl? Possibly. There have been unsubstantiated Marty sightings in the metro area already this week... Could this mean a return to Marty Ball? Possibly... Then again maybe not. There are plenty of qualified folks that could be considered for the position, such as Bill Cower or Scott Pioli. Here is the best argument against either of them: They aren't Marty Schottenheimer.

The Schottenheimer name still carries a lot of clout in Kansas City. Having him as the GM of the Chiefs would be a symbolic gesture that would seem to cue a return to the Chiefs' most recent glory days. It'd certainly get the fans excited in the Chiefs again... Schottenheimer's been around long enough that he's surely got a good enough grasp on the managerial aspect of being a GM, which will come in handy as he and Clark Hunt clean house at Arrowhead.

With all that being said, I'm hereby starting the official Marty Watchenheimer 2008: Countdown to Schottenheimer as GM.
