Lykke Li - Youth Novels

I don't remember when I first heard the single for Little Bit or how I found it, but I'm glad I did. The full length album 'Youth Novels' just came out so I thought I'd write a little about it. First off, Lykke Li is from Sweden - which instantly makes her cool in my mind. Sweden, for those who don't know, is a magical land of atheist Viking descendants who enjoy giving the MPAA/RIAA a middle finger. Home to IKEA, The Pirate Bay and Saab, I never really fancied Sweden as a hotbed of good music - Viking Folk/Death Metal notwithstanding.

Lykke Li (which I have NO idea how you pronounce... leek lee? lick lie? Either way, I'm sure it sounds hot when she introduces herself...) has one of those soft and light, high but not high-pitched voices that suit her songs well. I'd describe her style as somewhere between pop and jazz. Songs like I'm Good, I'm Gone and Little Bit would fit the former category, while Hanging High and Dance. Dance. Dance fit the latter. I'd have to say my favorite track is Beaking It Up, it's one of the more pop-ish songs. I still think, however, that Little Bit is the best song on the album. It's the track that I first heard from Lykke Li last November and it is the most representative of her style.

Lykke Li's video for Little Bit is a simple and stylish visual aide. The video isn't ladened with strippers and explosions, it doesn't distract from the music. The faded colors and mellow tones suit the song's light hearted melody. My favorite part is, of course, the crazy Swedes who rock out with inappropriate vigor during the chorus. Anyways, below is the video - check it out for yourself.

I've been listening to it for the past two months or so, and have come to the conclusion that I can't stand her voice. Don't know why...not for me.
