Remember 10 years ago when Weezer was just another awesome rock band who put out two amazing records, and then fell off the face of the Earth? For years I considered myself to be a genuine Weezer fan. If you asked me if I liked Weezer, I would say, "Yes...I like Weezer."
Then, like, five years later they made this "comeback" of sorts, and as much as we appreciated it, it just wasn't the same. All the sudden, with every subsequent release, the good-song-to-bad-song-ratio slowly became more and more lopsided.
The Green album holds a small sentimental place with me just because, it was Weezer, and they were back, and it was nice to see. It's got a handful of decent songs on there, but on a whole it was nothing compared to their prior work on top of every guitar solo playing along to the vocal line just got really annoying, really fast.
Maladroit...probably their least popular album, but I actually think their best one they've done since the comeback. In all honesty...I liked this album. But looking in the whole scheme of things, it's nothing that vindicates anything shitty they've done before or since. And even though I like it, it's not great by any means.
Make Believe was the most wretched piece of work this band has ever put out. If they had written these songs 15 years ago, they'd have realized how bad they were and never released them. But I guess nothing's too shitty for Rivers Cuomo these days.
Red Album: Shit Sandwich
In the end, I feel as if I've gone from being a Weezer fan and enjoying their work, to saying when you look at the big picture, Weezer is just another boring pop-punk band who once put out two great albums. Congratulations Weezer: You went from being an amazing rock band of my youth who walked off stage in your prime, to having the artistic consistency of a Ringo Starr solo project.
"...Oh, my my..."
I'd like to add that Weezer has no stage presence. None, not one bit.
i agree with everything this article says
I have to agree. I have seen them twice and if were not for the excellent songs I would have been bored to tears.
I also feel kind of the same way. I have not heard the Red album yet, possibly because I was so put off by Make Believe. I would not however call them pop punk. I'm not sure where I would put them genre-wise, but pop punk is probably not it. However if the Red album disappoints I will never throw away the Blue album or Pinkerton.
"Red Album: Shit Sandwich" Nuff said.
I think Rivers went insane... not to mention Matt Sharp was at least half of what made the band awesome. when he left (right after Pinkerton) was when they really went to shit.
Have to agree with this. They were never the same without Matt Sharp.
100% on the money. The Green Album was the last album I enjoyed in the least. I haven't even kept track of what has come out since then. Are these shit songs they've been releasing lately popular? I just remember hearing 'beverly hills' and being shocked that it was actually being given any airtime.
weezer should've stopped making albums 17 years ago.
And Rivers Cuomo is really still doing the fucking ironic mustache thing? Really? The mustache you grow to let everyone know you'd never be so uncool as to grow a mustache? We're still seriously fucking doing this asinine shit? Christ on his fucking cross, this world is doomed.
It can't be overemphasized that Matt Sharp was half of Weezer. He did the back up vocals, edited/wrote songs, and in general, kept Rivers in check. His leaving broke the back of the band, the ghost that came back isn't the same thing.
saw the Rentals play 2 years ago on their reunion tour and they were still great.
Actually I completely agreed with absolutely everything said on that article. I kind of wish weezer would really stop embarrassing itself, Red album was the last chance that I gave it. Never Again
This article does nothing to explain how the band's decline in quality has anything to do with Ulysses S. Grant.
Ulysses S. Grant could have left the American stage as a war hero in 1865, but ruined everything by coming back 4 years later and becoming one of the worst presidents in history, forever tarnishing his legacy.
Their last few albums have been so bad that they've actually made me like Pinkerton and the Blue album less, simply because I have grown to despise the band. It's really a shame.
i was thinking more like millard fillmore.
Franklin Pierce even... OMGWTFPWN3D!!!!!
I really enjoyed the first two albums, and Maladroit has some killer tracks on it. Fall Together, Take Control, and Keep Fishin are awesome.
I even dig American Gigolo.
But their next album, can't listen to it. I'm not sure I'll be giving Red a try.
Or, "How come things aren't as good as I remember them from when I was a kid?" Add stick shaking and a "Keep off the lawn" sign for best effect.
Which is not to say that I completely disagree, but never compare nostalgia with anything current unless you intend to be dissapointed.
